Sastra University

SASTRA University started in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Trichy. In 2001 it was renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. It was the first institution to get the 'Deemed University status' in Tamil Nadu. Srinivasa Ramanujam Center at Kumbakonam is affiliated to it.

In 2011, software company Tata Consultancy Services set a world record of recruiting 1,500 students from SASTRA, the largest recruitment by any company in the world from a single campus.

Campus facilities

The campus occupies a built up area of over 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2)[4] and houses a population of over 9,000 students.

The institute has nine boys hostels and five girls hostels providing accommodation to over 5000 boys and 3000 girls. There are facilities for sports and body building. There are 30 rooms with all basic amenities catering to the needs of the visitors.

The entire campus is networked with a 1 GB fibre-optic cable and is Wi-Fi enabled to provide wireless access to the 366 Mbit/s internet leased line for the students and faculty. Campus-wide wireless connectivity has been implemented at a cost of over Rs. 35 lakhs providing a wire-less seamless internet connectivity to anybody and anywhere in the campus. Important lectures are recorded using the Tegrity cart and is uploaded in the server & also maintained in the library for use by all the stakeholders. Students and faculty members are provided with Network Attached Storage facility which is platform-independent and is accessible throughout the campus.

Admissions
Admissions are through merit (marks from HSC and JEE (Main) and NRI Quota). The counseling is usually done during the later half of June with the college opening for freshers in the month of July.Admissions to the I year B.Tech., Programme are based on the marks secured in the +2 qualifying examination following the normalization process. To bring all candidates from different examining Authorities / Boards in the same scale of comparison and to create a list in the order of merit, the +2 marks are normalized. A first rank student of each board is considered to have obtained 100% mark and aggregate mark of all other students of the board are normalized with reference to that of the first rank student.

Events and accolades
The university has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, government of India. It was ranked 10th among private engineering colleges in the country by Outlook 2008. Its School Of Chemical and Biotechnology was ranked 1st among all private institutions in the country and 2nd (overall) in India.

It has been highly appreciated by the Washington Accord team. The Washington Accord is an agreement that provides mobility for Indian engineering graduates around the world. There are nine countries that are signatories and four countries are provisional members. The Accord team visited India in 2005 and visited three government institutions and SASTRA to assess the quality of engineering education. It was impressed by the undergraduate facilities and expressed satisfaction about the universities quality and standards in its educational activities.
